My Favorite Teaching Moment
I have always enjoyed the opportunity to contribute whatever I can of myself—time, knowledge, wisdom, or love—to other people, especially youths. But in the evening of my career, I’ve discovered that what keeps me going is the mystery of it all—never really knowing what kind of difference I am making in the life of another person. The mystery inspires me to behave as if what I do may be making all the difference in the world.
During my student teaching many years ago, I was working with a 5th grade flute player on an especially challenging skill. We worked one-on-one, trying many strategies, and even creating new ones. As he and I both persevered through so many trials and errors, he finally “got it.” The look on his face and the joy in his eyes has lasted me all these years and will go with me to my grave. The opportunity to help bring about that kind of accomplishment and personal victory is an incredible privilege and blessing. I cherish it.
Why I Love Teaching PLS Courses
I love sharing the PLS strategies and concepts with teachers and seeing their enthusiasm, excitement, and surprise when they discover how immediately applicable they are to their classrooms. Better than most other courses I’ve taken, PLS understands what real kids in real schools are like so that real teachers can help them be successful.
