My Favorite Teaching Moment

I love working with other motivated, caring teachers in many disciplines and at various grade levels. PLS offers me a unique perspective where I can observe a K-12 scope and sequence for education in America. Even better, I get to help the dedicated teachers in my classes to better reach each one of their students.

What I love most about teaching is the feeling you get when you know—for sure—that you’ve taught a student something new or truly engaged a student in his/her learning. PLS offers me the opportunity to help fellow teachers wrack up “Ah ha!” moments by helping them to examine their methodology in terms of best practices and implement effective strategies in their classrooms.

One of my favorite moments in my teaching career came when a group of my at-risk senior students pulled together to perform an abbreviated version of Hamlet on stage with a few costumes and props. Seeing students who were dealing with the stresses of tough home lives, teenage parenting, working more than twenty hours per week, and trying to finish their senior year do the difficult work to understand Shakespeare and Hamlet’s themes in order to successfully portray the memorable characters, soliloquies, and action on stage will always stay in my mind’s eye and my teacher’s heart.
