My Favorite Teaching Moment

My favorite moment in teaching was in one of my first jobs as a full-time teacher for a first-grade child who had a brain tumor. I was her teacher for the entire year in a one-on-one setting in a private school. The tumor affected her vision and also created difficulties for her in learning to read. My favorite moment of all time was the day she sounded out a word for the first time. We were both so excited I wanted to cry. It was a humbling experience. She had worked so hard and put forth such outstanding effort to reach that milestone! That was almost 30 years ago, and I will never forget how happy she was and the look of delight on her face at that accomplishment. I can still picture it today as if it just happened.

I am curious about learning new things, and I love learning from my students, no matter what their age. There is always something to learn! In addition, it is very exciting when something that we have done in class has led students to an “Aha!” moment. Nothing can top that!
